WESTCHESTER, IL – State Rep. Chris Welch (D-Hillside) recently announced the conditional awarding of a $500,000 Home Energy Auditor Training Program grant to the Proviso-Leyden Council for Community Action (PLCCA), Inc. to train and certify at least 87 people in green technology jobs. The PLCCA is a non-for-profit corporation that serves low-income residents in Cook County's Proviso and Leyden Townships and Norridge, including some of the metropolitan areas of Chicago.
“I commend the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity on their efforts to improve our environment and to help create new opportunities for people that are unemployed,” Welch said. “This grant will help boost our local economy, improve energy efficiency and bring jobs to our area. Providing people with the skills necessary to obtain employment, especially during these difficult economic times, is invaluable for our area.”
The Urban Weatherization Initiative is administered by the Office of Urban Assistance in the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). According to the DCEO website, it is the first state-funded weatherization program in the country. Weatherization activities include: the repair or replacement of inefficient heating or cooling units and water heaters, addressing air infiltration issues and pipe or duct insulation.
“The PLCCA would like to thank Rep. Welch for his support in obtaining the Weatherization Initiative grant,” said Bishop Dr. Claude Porter, president and founder of PLCCA. “The grant will help us address the need for sustainability and employment opportunities in our neighborhoods. We strive to bring economic development and help people to become self-sufficient, contributing citizens and we look forward to beginning our work on the project.”
