Welch Wears Red for Heart Disease Awareness

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Rep Chris Welch (D-Hillside) wore red to the Capitol, Wednesday, in support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women push to educate women on the risk factors of heart disease. The Conference of Women Legislators encouraged legislators to participate in the annual Statehouse event.

“I am proud to support the Go Red for Women effort to raise awareness about the devastating effects of heart disease, and I commend the American Heart Association on their hard work,” Welch said. “Heart disease is the number one killer of women and men in Illinois, and I am proud to join my colleagues for this cause. Going forward, we need comprehensive policies to make health care more accessible to all residents and help them receive preventative care.”

Risk factors for cardiovascular disease include cigarette smoking, high blood pressure and elevated blood cholesterol levels, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Women who are physically active have a 60 percent to 75 percent lower risk of heart disease than women who are not.

“More women die from heart disease than from anything else,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck.  “I encourage every woman to make sure they know the warning signs of a heart attack, to ask their doctor questions about cholesterol levels, blood pressure and general heart health, and to learn how to lower their risk for heart disease.”

According to the American Heart Association, the Go Red for Women campaign’s efforts to raise awareness and promote healthy lifestyles has saved more than 600,000 lives over the last decade. Go Red has funded studies showing women’s responses to treatments and medications and published guidelines on treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease.
