Welch Addressed Proviso Math and Science Academy Graduation Saturday

WESTCHESTER, Ill. –State Rep. Chris Welch, D-Hillside, gave words of encouragement to graduating seniors Saturday, as the keynote speaker for the Proviso Math & Science Academy (PMSA) commencement ceremony.

“Proviso Math and Science Academy is a grand institution in our community, and I am proud to have played a role in the formation of this outstanding school,” Welch said. “It is a beacon of hope, and the children that enter as freshmen and leave as young men and women are everyday examples of the value of a Proviso education.  PMSA graduates have gone on to some of the best universities across this nation; they are now doctors, lawyers, engineers, and scientists.”

Rep. Welch served for nearly 10 years as president of the Proviso Township High School District 209 board, and has been a longtime advocate for improving education. He led efforts to create Proviso Math and Science Academy, which was the first suburban-based magnet high school. Welch has sponsored several initiatives to improve education statewide, including ‘Bring Your Parents to School Day,’ an initiative that he started while serving as the District 209 President, and by serving as a member of education committees in the General Assembly.

“Graduation is only the beginning for Proviso students, and I’m sure they will grow to become industrious members of their communities,” Welch said. “Getting an education better prepares them for the challenges ahead, and this achievement will open doors and break down barriers. I have been honored to serve as the keynote speaker at this year’s graduation ceremony and look forward to seeing great achievements from all of the students in this 2014 class.”
